TECHNIQUE

Full leather Bradel style binding with a disappearing spine. Hand dyed fair goat front and back boards with a dark blue goatskin spine. The spine has been tooled with gold foil and the front and back boards have been tooled and stenciled in various coloured foils.

Dark blue goatskin headbands have been gold foil tooled to match the text block edges. The leather jointed end papers and doublures are a series of etching press relief prints, hand printed.

DESIGN

The illustrations are quite strong within this text block so I wanted to compliment these somehow. I chose the illustration LXX as it possessed a lot of movement and interesting textures. I focused on a small area, enlarged this and then abstracted the design for the endpapers and doublures. It was then an interesting challenge to imitate the ink patterns on the paper onto the leather with dyes and tooling.

I kept a minimal “palette” as I felt that the navy blue, white and gold harmonized with the majority of the illustrations.
