Bound in full goatskin, laced impressed and hand dyed with leather dyes. Foil was gently blocked onto the surface of the skin to bring out the decorative pattern of the lace using relief stencils. Silk headbands (black with blue, gold and pink “flashes”). Black leather joints.
he edge to edge doublures have been printed using the same patterned lace as the cover with pink oil based ink. Then decorated with stencil blocked foil and pink foil line work.
Karen Klassen’s illustrations are very strong; collage like with different textures and layers. I wanted the cover design to harmonise with these images.
I had already been experimenting with lace; impressing pieces into leather and printing strips onto different textured papers. Coincidentally, there are collaged lace fragments within a couple of the illustrations in the book.
I researched colours, patterns and graphics from the 50’s and 60’s and combined this all with the lace background.
